Bubbles
Flooding strikes the country as a result of overloaded water channels. Periodically the capacity of river beds is exeeded. The grey water output generated by urban areas is a result of their huge sealed surfaces and the large amounts of water being used. In order to create a buffer for the temporary surplus we propose equalizing areas that work as collecting basins. They consist of biological matter whithin which transpiration can take place. Thus, the delivering to the river and the channels will be delayed. The equalizing basins with their unique natural qualities evolve into an unique settlement. Classical urbanisation requires excessive densification and the drainage of the soil. Floating houses and infrastructure allow for minimal intervention upon the ground and maximising the possibility of future reversal. Natural processes like fluctuating water levels will determine the living condition. ![]() The living unit plugs
into the network of existing infrastructure by means of the "umbilical
cord". The buildings are standard prefabricated, single family houses with a floating base. There autonomy is further emphasized by a rain water collecting system. Two bubbles of translucent material intersect the house. With the growing amount of collected water these bubbles swell into spacious water pools. The collected water can be used for laundry, claening, toiletry needs and plant hydration. Internal spaces of the houses are dominated by the presence of the bubbles. Morphing with the amount of water the interiors change spacially. The use of the bubble changes with the demands of the inhabitants and the various water conditions. They can became a swimming pool, a waterlilly pond, a sauna, a living room or, during the night, an atmospheric illuminated sphere. |
