Vitalizing Border

Code PSC020

Ocean is the immense source of water, the "mystical" substance of the universe from which all living thing emerge to fill the world with life and articulate the nature with beauty.

When the ocean can not reach parts the world's surface, dry lands are created, providing places for human beings to live. In addition, ocean also provides various kind of food for those living on the lands.

Incited by these facts, the scheme is aimed to give the dike, bordering The Netherlands from the ocean, vitality so that it can also be used as well as a living place. The living place here specifically refers to firstly, a place where people carry out their activities and secondly, an area to grow plants throughout the year.

These functions are accommodated by two giant structures, integrated with the structure of the dike. Each structure forms an organic mass following the meeting line between the land and the sea. Half parts of the structures stand on the sea side and the other halves are on the dry land.
The principle form of structure over the area to grow plants is generated from the idea of a green house. In this case the structure, composed mainly by glass, covers a large area of natural landscape. The area therefore can also be used for recreation. Plants are regularly showered with water, coming out from pipes above the area. Water is channeled from reservoir underneath half of the landscape (see section).

Housing units on the other structure are arranged in a way to admit maximum natural light into the units. Landscaping in the middle consists of plants, which live either in dry or wet environment.
