Relationship
As far as the environmental
aspect is concerned, the outstanding point of the project is the strict
relationship between the dwellings, the water and the marshy underwater
soil. These components of the amphibious environment seem to possess common
characteristics: they offer meagre resistance to building forces and structures,
they configure a flat landscape without high trees and they are both subject
to change and to expand with time. On the basis of these considerations, we propose a standard dwelling unit that is divided into two parts, superimposed and articulated each other. The upper part is conceived as a floating house and it can be surrounded by water. The lower unit behaves as the anchor of the upper one: it is heavy and sinks in part within the underwater soil. The lower unit is binded to the upper one and hence it can act as a stabilizer of its horizontal floating movements while leaving it free to move vertically. Each one of these double
dwelling structures can be considered the basis for 4 living units composed
of 2 persons: an obvious flexibility to adapt the units to different familiary
situations is foreseen. Some of these basic dwellings will be destined
to social activities: the dwellings are connected each other over the
water surface by means of bridges. The overall residential project is based upon 6 double dwelling units per hectar. Every unit will contain also a separated area for social functions and common services, averaging approx. the double of the surface destined to private housing. Each living unit will
behave as a modular reality, allowing multiple articulations between the
different floating houses while their aggregation will become the nucleous
of social stability for the amphibious community. In this way, the public
life will originate from the union of the private livings and the private
life could be rediscovered with the highest flexibility. This proposal respects the environmental characteristics of the amphibious environment and leaves the water and the underwater soil almost untouched. The landscape will remain flat: only some large wings will be visible as the landmarks of the amphibious community in the watery plain. |
