Floating Flop
Code PAC060
eervolle vermelding / mention of the jury
proposal for floating
housing structure that provides water purification and ecological stepping
stone network for the polder inside of the"Greenheart". The housing unit
called "flop" forms any pattern of living environment that consists of
three different functions: shared accomodation container, ecological water
garden and amphibious open space. .
Urban development context
Historically speaking, the Netherlands provided an unique urbanization
model different from neighboring countries. The so-called"Dijkstad"
with huge polder farms is a good example of contemporary "compact
city" idea. It shows niether centric metropolis nor rural periphery
but small scaled towns linked with water management network. The current
"Randstad"idea also shows this fine Dutch tradition. It is not
a physical high-rised metropolis built area but a town network on the
ring of core cities surrounding the "Greenheart".
Specific location for the proposal
This proposal is set on any typical Dutch polder site near by small scaled
town inside the Greenheart". The purpose of the project aims to establish
an optimum interface both for light architectural design and for ecological
environment's network. In spite of the unique concept of "Deltapole",
it has not solved yet many environmental issues caused by rapid increase
of human settlement such as water pollution by human waste, agricultural
pesticide and also the fragmentation of ecological field balance .In this
regard, many polders inside the"Greenheart" hold quite significant
value for designating future Dutch urbanization plans both for environmental
and aesthetical space concerns.

network for stepping stone ecotope housing
The proposed 5 hector housing block functions as[not only for] human living
accomodations but also for the network of biological "ecotope".
It provides a rich ecological environment for one site, but is also layed
out as a multiple polder site as steppingstone inside "Greenheart".
This would establish an island network of ecological conservation.
Dutch architectural tradition
The elemental and horizontal hierachy space organization is denotive of
the so-called Dutch structuralism group's in the 60's . This is not a
kind of surface style issue but a connecting to more fundamental space
ideas that links back to medival town planning's vision based on water
management. The miracle of polder control was attained not by central
power but by the network of independent light compact human settlments.
There should remain a certain climatological consistency for architectural
thinking in the Netherlands beyond the centuries.

Floating flop
Floating flop idea partly derives from Dutch structualism architectural
design concept. It is not for the visual concern but for the invisible
netowork of space organization. The word "flop" is extracted
from the "floppy disk" and homless' daily accomodation's slang:"flop".
Both are characterized for minimal container capacities for the function.Especially
homeless flops show a potentiality as transportable and flexible human
accomodations detached from each site context.
Family portrait
It is difficult to illustrate an average family portrait today without
any specific condition. There is no more standard rather than co-existance
of heterogenic individuality. This tendency is accelerated more rapidly
by current net-society.While at the same time, it is also clear everybody
prefers to live in a comfortable house that is privacy oriented and with
highly customized interior design.

flop network
The proposed flop unit consists of three different functions; The living
accomodation container, ecological water garden and amphibious open space. The
living accomodation container correspond to the functions of bathing,
chatting,cooking, dining,meeting,playing,relaxing and sleeping. Also,
the roof surface (1.2hector)provides a resting deck for birds and flying
insects. The ecological water garden provides various types of amphibious
botanical growth surfaces together with amphibious creature's playing
ground. The amount of this water garden(1.2hector) also functions as water
purification pond for existing polder site.Amphibious open space ( 2.4hector)
serve as in-between functional usage such as corridor, gymnastic, garden
party space, etc for human occupants, but also as multifunctional utility
for the non-human creatures(living collaborators).The flop combination
create any type of family house plan and biological ecotope as a whole
with relatively easy installation and low budget.
Same sized container with free topping
Different from French cusine, Japanse Sushi shows non hierarchical eating
order with free topping, not chef to dicide toping dishes but the guest's
spontaneous choice. The flop idea also resembles Japanese traditional
(relatively ampfibious) food dining manner: being compact, independent,
free combination, easy installation and little waste.
