Yacht Houses
Maintaining this infrastructure, which defends dry land, is expensive and vulnerable to the risks of inflation. Concerns of global warming affect Holland because it is already largely below sea level and is vulnerable to rising sea levels caused by global warming. Maintenance of the river system restores natural purification of the ecology. Restoring this healthy lifecycle also restores the natural order between humankind and nature. Yacht Houses is the center of this redefinition of boundaries between humankind, nature and the environment. The long-term effects on the environment of these methods include the pile up of sand on river bottoms, which increases the danger of flooding. Also, man-made riverbanks disrupt the eco system replacing natural habitat with artificial aqueducts. A successful design must enhance the ecosystem while controlling costs.
Location The subject of this design is Yacht Houses located on the site of a newly formed land parcel, damp from diluvium flooding and encroached by a nearby river. The diluvium marshland is formed along the dike by excavating sand from the nearby river. Digging of the river bottom will cause the river to deepen, restoring the natural movement of sand creating sandbars. Harnessing the seasonal cycle of water plane flooding by using sandbars, guards against the natural risk of flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
Concept The purpose of Yacht Houses is to restore the natural river system using existing dikes to reclaim natural wetlands and create a more natural balance between humankind and the environment. We want to enjoy the natural character afforded by the process of land reclamation while respecting the impact of changes made to accommodate this process.
The existing dikes will include low rise, medium density business offices and commercial areas on one side complemented with floating docks on the other. These docks form interconnected Yacht Houses. This division assists the site preparation by placing the light constriction on the wetland side and heavy constriction on the dry land side. Construction of the medium rise business offices creates a wall, which avoids strong winds blowing from marshy land to polder.
The Yacht House design
consists of three floors with a total area of 200 square meters per house,
built over the marshy area. From the first floor, a resident can go out
to the wetland, which could be a meeting area for his/her neighbors. The
second floor has four individual rooms. These rooms can be divided, changed
and extended freely depend on the residence life style. |
